Sam Storms made some comments in this podcast that need some clarification. If there are some people in his church who have made a profession of faith, that say they love Jesus, are bearing fruit in ministry, etc., yet the possibility exists that their faith is not saving faith, that they don’t quite love Jesus with their whole heart, how can anyone then really have assurance of their salvation? How can even Sam Storms know that he has not deluded himself and that he is really not regenerate?
Guys–(Tim, Michael, Sam),
If our faith is truly a gift of God that no man can produce himself and comes after we are regenerated, which is what Calvinism believes (right?), then what good does it do to tell people to be sure they have the right kind of faith in the right Jesus?
Only the elect can have that faith in Calvinism understanding, right? And they will surely have it. So how can you tell someone to be sure you have the right faith and to put it in the right place? Seems hopelessly circular and impossible to me. (More then just a tension here, IMO. But an impossibility).
And I echo the question asked by Hans above.
Hi Cherylu,
This topic has been batted around on Theologica for about 12 pages of comments and in my first pass through the discussion, I don’t think I filtered out a satisfactory answer from the Calvinist responses on the board (and I is one). If you want to read that discussion just search on Theologica for assurance. It was the one that started in August 2010.
Rgds,
Hans
Thanks Hans,
Will check that out when I get the time.
